Compassion, Self-Control, Honesty, Integrity- A New Month of Cardinal Character!

March 7, 2011 kensielane

Hi!
Today was a great day! It’s a new month for Cardinal Character, so I had the opportunity to hold another fun assembly with the Hale R-1 Elementary to emphasize my platform ”Promoting Good Character Among Americans” through our school Cardinal Character Program.   We reviewed our past month character traits.  All of the traits are pillars that hold up our school, and RESPECT is the foundation! We did our Citizenship rap again! :) That is always fun for the kids!

Next, we went on to our new traits.  For Compassion, we talked about genuinely caring for the well-being of others and understanding that everyone is different.  We did an activity “Walking around in another persons shoes.” This helps students understand what it means to sympathise with another person.  A 6th Grader, Haze tried to fit into tiny 1st Grader, Carter’s shoes, but couldn’t fit into them, and Haze’s shoes were big on Carter. Everyone is different and we must be accepting of others and try to understand what they are going through!

Then I spoke about Self-Control.  5th Grader Casper, came down and we did an activity with cake! We pretended that Casper was at recess playing ball, so he took a bite of the cake (having fun), and someone came up and said something mean and hit his ball away. Casper probably initially wanted to say something back, and get the last word in (get the whole cake), but that wouldn’t be the way to win the cake.  If he did that, then “SPLAT!” I dumped the cake on the floor. But, if Casper was the bigger person and was friendly back, he wins the cake of strong character and friendship! So Casper got a big slice of cake.

The last thing they learned about was Honesty and Integrity. I told them to think of “Honest Abe”, if you are honest and truthful, you will become tall with strong character and others will look up to you. I asked them to think about how wonderful of a place the world would be if everyone was always honest and loving. :)

Have a great day! I hope you enjoyed reading my blog, and learning some new character activities!

Love,
